2017 YEAR IN REVIEW

It was another busy year at the Orange County Ronald McDonald House! Our families got a surprise visit from future Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, and we hit the links with some of the NBA’s greats at the Basketball Hall of Fame Golf Classic hosted by Jerry West. We began work on a new playground and refurbished our sanctuary, as well as both Ronald McDonald Family Rooms (at CHOC Mission and CHOC Orange). At over 100% capacity for several consecutive years, we started laying the foundation for a plan to add 20 additional guest rooms on the lot adjacent to the House. Our leadership and board have been actively working on a feasibility plan to meet the needs of our families with an enhanced guest environment, increased family support services, and more efficient facilities for our staff and volunteer. Stop by the House to learn more or find out how you can get involved!

THE
CARMICHAEL FAMILY

Five days after Charlotte’s pediatrician detected a heart murmur during a regular checkup (typically a minor condition), the 2 month-old went into heart failure and was rushed to the emergency room to undergo open-heart surgery. Charlotte’s mom, Jami, was allowed to stay with her, but there was no room for her father Chris, and the family home was more than an hour’s drive from the hospital. That’s when a nurse told them about the Orange County Ronald McDonald House – right across the street! Jami remembers how well-decorated and cared-for the House felt on their first visit, like a home, not a hotel. “It was such a massive relief to have a place to call home during this unbelievably stressful time,” Jami says. The night after Charlotte’s successful surgery, her parents made a big midnight breakfast at the House and stayed up talking for hours. When they awoke the next morning, a group of volunteers was waiting with a fresh meal and a kitchen full of smiles. A few weeks later, Charlotte was sent home with a perfect heart, while her parents said goodbye to a House filled with new friends.
