2017 YEAR IN REVIEW

All year long in 2017, we celebrated the 5th Anniversary of our founding in Long Beach: five years surrounding families who arrive through our doors with our incredible community of friends and volunteers. As we’ve grown closer to our local world-class hospital partners, the number of guests we serve each year has continued to rise—more than 2,200 in 2017, including dozens who traveled from outside the country to seek specialized medical care for their child. Of course, we couldn’t provide such a high-level of comfort and care for these families without the dedication of our volunteers, who made over 440 meals and kept our House full year-round with delicious smells and warm smiles. We had a lot of fun, too, celebrating with our Red Shoe Society members at the Havana Nights Gala; honoring 11 amazing local heroes at our A Few Good Men Gala; and getting out in the sun with 1,500 of our closest friends at Walk for Kids. We’re thrilled to be part of such a supportive community and excited to embark on the next five years providing exceptional service and care to kids and families when they need us most.

After a lengthy process of fertility treatments, Lucia and Alex Maricich were overjoyed when they received the news last summer that they were expecting their first child. In October, after a healthy and routine first trimester of pregnancy, Lucia and Alex decided to fly from their home in Maryland to celebrate their first wedding anniversary with Alex’s parents in Redondo Beach. Days into their vacation, life for the couple changed in an instant when Lucia developed a placental abruption and was rushed to the Emergency Room, ending up at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center for specialized high-risk prenatal care. Six days later, at just five-months pregnant, Lucia gave birth to little Milo, who weighed 1lb 4.4oz. Soon it was time for Lucia to check out, but Milo was still a long way from recovery. That’s when a social worker at the hospital told her about our House. “It’s amazing,” says Alex. “We’re able to walk back and forth to the hospital whenever we need, even when we get a phone call in the middle of the night. We would never be able to do that if we were anywhere else.” Now several months later, Lucia and Alex still ride a daily rollercoaster of emotions as Milo’s growth and development continues. Milo is showing everyone his fighting spirit, and his weight continues to increase. And, because of supporters like you, Lucia and Alex have been able to stay by Milo’s side every step of the way.
